So, buckle up your seat belts and get ready to witness the amazing experience that will definitely upgrade your English level and will help you score better bands in IELTS examination.

IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is a standard exam that evaluates the English communication skills of aspirants who are looking to immigrate to Native English speaking countries like UK, Australia, Canada, USA etc.

What does it mean ?

The English speaking countries have a defined protocol where they assess the skills of non native speakers.

How does this help ?

This helps the organisations or the institutions in selecting appropriate candidates from the world. If they want to hire anyone or want to enroll a student for further education in their institution, IELTS help them filter out the incapable candidates. There is no point of getting those people in English speaking countries who are ineffective communicators and cannot participate in the country’s growth and development.

Exam Pattern

IELTS exam is of two types :

  • Academic – Mainly for students.
  • General Training – Mainly for PR application.

Both the exam types have following sections :

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Learning the sections step by step

IELTS Listening

Introduction

IELTS listening is the first exam that will come in the sequence. Whether you appear for online exam or paper based, listening module will be first one followed by Reading and Writing. This information is crucial and you should be prepared to listen the audio in the beginning of your exam.

Listening pattern / Structure

  • Listening is the First exam of the sequence .
  • You will get breaks in between the individual modules of listening.
  • Paper based students get 10 minutes after completion of all section to fill the answers from rough paper whereas no such time is permitted to students appearing for computer based exam.
  • Listening module consists of 40 Questions and 4 sections,
  • Section 1 is comparatively easier followed by section 2,3 and then 4.
  • You have to Answer while listening to the Audio.
  • Every section Audio will play and student is supposed to answer the 10 related questions. After completion of one section, the second section will start.
  • Headphones will be provided.
  • You will get a break to read questions of every section and then the audio will begin. It is also possible that you will get one audio for 5 questions or sometimes 1 audio together for 10 questions.
IELTS Listening Module sub sections

Important Points

  • Check your headphones are working & adjust volume levels.
  • Use your breaks effectively to read the next questions.
  • Audio will be played only once.
  • Be smart with distractions :
  • Audio might say one content and you might think that answer is right. But be cautious in listening to full sentence. For example,
    • Question says – Tentative date of arrival.
    • Audio says – 21 february and then later on it says I was wrong, it is 22 February. This kind of audio is called distraction and you have to be alert while filling the data.

  • UK / British
  • Canadian
  • American
  • Australian

90% of the time it is British. To practise and enhance your listening skills, you should watch English movies.

Troubles in Listening : Identifying the root causse

We are non native speakers and hence not habitual to hear the conversations. If you communicate in English only at certain situation, then you are not developing your English communications skills.

Solution

Make English your part of life. Start listening to English songs with Lyrics.

Types of Questions

Telephone Conversation

  • Difficulty Level – Easy
  • Section asked in – Generally Section 1 of listening module

In this type of listening section, you will hear two people talking on phone and you will be filling out the details in the form. For example, Person A calling Person B for a hotel reservation. They will be exchanging key information related to the booking and the questions in the exams will be based on those details.

Monologue

  • Difficulty Level – Tougher than Telephone conversation
  • Section asked in – Generally Section 2 of listening module

Instead of two people interacting, one person will be speaking on a topic.

Conversation between 2 or 3 People with multiple options to select

  • Difficulty Level – Toughest
  • Section asked in – Generally Section 3 of listening module

This involves multiple people talking about one topic. The problem with this type is that generally the answer options are bigger than the questions. So, you waste time reading the answers and miss out the spoken content.

Map Labelling

  • Difficulty Level – If you miss something than this is the toughest. Else easy.
  • Section asked in – Generally Section 3 or 4 of listening module

You will be listening to instructions talking about a map and you have to mark the places as described in the conversation.

Flow Chart

  • Difficulty Level – Medium.
  • Section asked in – Generally Section 3 or 4 of listening module

It could be monologue or conversation involving multiple people, but the questions will be one after other like you will a flow chart.

Matching

  • Difficulty Level – Medium but Tricky
  • Section asked in – Generally Section 3 or 4 of listening module

You will have one question than you will have multiple options given. Based on the audio, you have pick the best suitable option. There could be a possibility that you will be asked to select two options.

IELTS Reading

Introduction

IELTS reading is the second test of your exam. It becomes tough because after one hour of listening, you might be a bit exhausted.

Reading Pattern / Structure

  1. The structure will be different for GT and Academic
    • GT – 5 passages
    • Academic – 3 Passages
  2. Passages might be more in GT, but are generally smaller as compared to Academic.
  3. You get 60 minutes to solve the questions.

Important Points

  1. Answer should be grammatically correct.
  2. You should write within word limit. For example, if question says write no more than two words then you should ensure you do not write more than the specified limit.
  3. Write Correct spelling.
  4. 40 Questions will be there in 60 minutes. If you are on paper based pattern, you will be required to transfer answers from rough sheet to Answer sheet.
  5. Always read the questions before you read paragraphs. This will help you identify what you have to find. You can unsderstand this with an example. Consider that you have a ticket which mentions your seat number. What will you do, will you go inside bus and look every seat and then read the alloted seat number or will you first look into your seat number and then go and find that seat. Whichever is convenient for you, you can proceed accordingly.

Types of Questions

Matching Headings

You will be getting a content with multiple paragraphs. Now every paragraph will talk about a specific content and you have to identify the title for that. You will have multiple options and you have to select the best suitable title based on the content.

Example

Answer

Paragraph A – II

TRUE / FALSE / NOT Given

Trust me, this is the toughest part of Reading. You won’t even realise this until you get a surprise in the examination. The biggest confusion would be with statements where you can predict the meaning and it looks obvious and you select TRUE but if the content is not specifcially mentioned in the passage, it has to be marked as NOT Given.

Sample Question

Summary Completion

You have to select the summary of the content or the section of the article. For example, consideer the following pasage :

Important Tips

  • Do not waste your time in writing only one task. Both have dedicated weightage and hence spend time appropriately on both the tasks.
  • You cannot go off topic. For example topic asks your daily routine and you start writing about your gym time and gym schedule. This will impact your score negatively.
  • Do not write memorized response.

  2. Report Writing (Only in Academic IELTS Writing)

Letter Writing

Letters can be formal / informal. It could be to your friend or to any official representative. Here is a best solution for this problem. I always tell my students that plan your actions to be the best. This approach which I am going to tell you now will drastically improve your letter writing skills.

Whatever the topic is going to be, you have to start with the structure.

IELTS writing Letter Structure

To understand the structure, you should familiriaze yourself to the questions. Every IELTS question generally asks for sub queries. Meaning, you will not get a simple statement asking you to write a letter to your friend, rather you will get a question with sub queries. Here is an example,

Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter,

  • describe what you enjoyed about the course
  • say how much cooking you’ve done since the course
  • suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer

Now whatever letter you are requested to write, you have to follow the below format.

  • Paragraph 1 – Intro Paragraph
  • Paragraph 2 – To cover Question number 1 of your exam
  • Paragraph 3 – Cover Second question
  • Paragraph 4 – Cover Third question and conclude.

Essay Writing

This topic carries more weightage. If you can stick to our strategy, you will definitely improve your score.

IELTS Essay Writing Structure

Just like the letter approach, here also we have to adhere to a definite writing structure. This will be devided into :

1) Introduction Paragraph
  • Sentence 1 – General Statement.
  • Sentence 2 – Paraphrase of the Question.
  • Sentence 3 – Thesis.
2) Body Paragraph 1
  • Sentence 1 – Heading Sentence of paragraph
  • Sentence 2 – Use Connector + Idea 1
  • Sentence 3 – Explanation of Idea with example

IELTS Speaking

Introduction

IELTS speaking is generally scheduled on a day different than your Listening / Reading or Writing exam. It could be earlier or later or even on the same day. But key point is that this will be a separate exam. I personally feel speaking and listening are the toughest as there is only one chance to prepare your response. If you miss, you do not even get time to think.

You must also be thinking what is the best time for giving IELTS exam. Our informative article will guide you decide wisely. Read it.

Pattern / Structure

  • IELTS speaking is devided into 3 different parts :
    • Part 1 – Introductory questions.
      • This will be all about you.
      • To get the conversation going examiner will ask questions about your likes dislikes, your hobbies etc.
      • It is important to note that do not give one word anwers. Purpose of these question is to begin the conversation and keep it going.
    • Part 2 – Card Task
      • This could include any topic, Example
        • How famous is your hometown.
        • Describe your latest holiday experience.
        • How is your education related to your job role.
    • Part 3 – Follow up Questions
      • Once you are done with the topic, examiner will continue to ask follow up questions based on your response of Part 2.
      • Again the purpose of this section is to get the conversation going .
      • Also, it is designed in a way that any user with well prepared answers has to respond based on real time scenario.

Criteria / Rules for Scoring

Coherence & Fluency

It is very important that during your speaking evaluation, you should be fluent with your speach.

Lexical Resources

This includes the following items.

  1. Vocabulary (Qaulity)
  2. Synonyms
  3. Appropriate usage.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

You need to use Grammar appropriately to score good marks. But if you want to score high, you need to consider the following points :

  1. Usage of tenses and Passive Voice
    • This is interesting to know that if you keep on stretching your response with a monotonous structure, you are not going to score high. You might be using correct Tense but you have to showcase your wide knowledge of English. Using Passive voice is a key. Practice speaking sentences in your day to day life so that you present to be a natural speaker while
  2. Usage of various types of sentence structure
    • This includes using simple sentences, complex sentences, compound sentences etc for communicating. This will definitely give you the best score.
  3. General Grammar Usage
    • You should be familiar to the modal verbs, nouns, pronouns etc so that you tend to speak like a native speaker. Let me give you a very layman example :
      • He wakes up. He takes bath. He goes to School – POOR sentence
      • He takes bath every morning before going to school – Good Sentence.
  4. Pronunciation
    • For speaking any word, it is important to know its correct pronunciation. Though this factor is not a major one if you are able to convey the meaning. But if you are drastrically deviating, you will lose marks for this.

Important tips for Speaking

  1. Never ever give one word answers. The exam is to showcase your English not to be technically correct.
  2. Do not worry even if you are giving fake response. For example the question is to talk about your recent theatre experience. Probably you might have not been to theatre ever in life. But you can still frame up the response with an imagination.

India is probably one of the country where students appear for IELTS exam on mass level. It is very common that a person appears for Ielts exam multiple times and at various locations. Though the IELTS exam follows the same pattern but there are few important points which you need to keep in your mind.

IELTS in India vs IELTS in world : Choosing right country for your exam

Exam Pattern

The Exam pattern is 100% same and if you have appeared for IELTS at a different location, don’t worry, you will see exactly the same exam pattern. it will include

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Exam Assessment

This is very important for you to understand that the exam assessment criteria is same across the world but  there are 2 sections that will involve human involvement and it varies from person to person and more importantly from location to location. For example, Speaking and Writing are assessed by regional examiners. So I would say you have to be careful about this factor.

Difference in speaking assessment

This is important but most of you might ignore. In fact there are multiple aspects which you need to consider :

  • IELTS does not score you for pronunciation but it does score you for clarity in speech. So if you are very new to this language prefer giving the exam in your native country.
  • Your accent does not matter, but the person taking your exam will speak in his own native accent. That might impact you. If in case you mishear something or understand incorrectly, it is possible that you will loose mark for speaking content which was not asked.
  • Using slangs might also impact your exam. Suppose you speak a local language phrase which the examiner doesn’t understand, It might give an impression to the examiner that you speak English sentences that have no meaning. This will impact your lexical resources. Check out this article for more details.

Difference in Writing Assessment

Writing will also get you good or bad score based on your exam location and can make you lag behind and inhibit your success. There are not multiple points which you have to focus on while writing your science exam, but there is one point which you should always keep in your mind :

Usage of slangs might impact your writing exam badly. Suppose you write a phrase which is common in your local area but is unknown to the English world. This might create a negative impression for your assessment. You need to make sure that when you’re appearing in different country, you should avoid using slangs.

Conclusion

Your exam location can impact IELTS score, but if you consider avoiding usage of slangs and practice for understanding the sentences spoken in different accents, you can definitely score good marks regardless of your exam location.

Important Tips for Computer based listening exam

1. Do not use Pen & Paper for writing answers (Very Important)

If you are giving computer based exam for the first time and have appeared for paper based exam before, you should remember that there is no extra time given to add back the answers from your paper to the computer.

Many students have reported that they failed to score good in IELTS listening because they were unable to copy answers from paper to their online portal.

2. Attempt the question even if you are not sure

There is no negative marking. So utilize the opportunity and try your luck. If you have a little bit of idea about the correct answer, still there is a probability if you attempt.

3. Do not assume you will be able to play / pause the audio considering you have access on computer

Audio gets played only once. You cannot pause it rewind it even if you are appearing on a computer.

4. Practice all question patterns before you go for the exam (Important)

There are different types of questions. Some might require you to drag and drop the answers and match with the question. Somewhere you will see map data to be filled out. You have to go through every pattern at least once before appearing into the exam.

Many a times you just practice listening, but students have reported the scenarios where they were confused about using the GUI and they missed to hear the audio. As audio is played only once, you might miss to answer few questions which will impact your IETS score.

Conclusion

The computer based IELTS has no major difference in the exam pattern, hence the tips of generic listening remains common. The specific differences of IELTS computer based test are documented in the article which will surely help you a lot.

If you are serious about your score, please visit the article content and do the needful as guided before appearing in the exam.

If you are reading this article, trust me you are one of the most sorted person who visit this blog. Normally people search to score band 9 regardless of their skillset and most importantly they fail to understand whether do they really need to score that much or not.

Band 6 is actually a satisfactory score where many educational institutes & Provinces accept this level for various applications.

Scoring Band 6 in IELTS Writing

There will be 2 tasks in this section :

  • Letter (General Training) / Report Writing (Academic)
  • Essay (Any topic)

IELTS have a well defined reference for assessing the test takers.

Criteria for Band 6 & How to achieve it

Source – IELTS Band Descriptors

Evaluation is based on four different parameters and to achieve maximum score, you have to excel in all aspects. Based on your response the examiner checks for the parameters as defined in their Band descriptors. Let us understand them with examples :

Assessment Parameter 1 : Task Achievement

Target :

All bullet points are covered and adequately highlighted. The purpose is generally clear. There may be minor inconsistencies in tone.

How to achieve :

For both Task 1 & Task 2, the questions structure consists of multiple statements. Meaning, whatever your topic is, you will see multiple key points making one complete question. You need to cover all the bullet points and address them in your task response with minor inconsistency in tone.

Example :

Essay Question :

Doctors recommend that older people exercise regularly. However, many of them do not get enough exercise.

  • What are the reasons?
  • What can be done to encourage them to exercise more?

Effective Solution:

Here you see that query is not just one, but is mentioning different points. It states :

  1. A Fact
  2. Reasons
  3. Solution.

In order to satisy the set criteria and score full marks for “Task Achievement“, you have to write points for all key points of the question. But as your target is band 6, you can try to write complete response but still if there is minor inconsistency that is acceptable. You will be able to achieve your desired band.

Allowed mistakes

You write more elaborated for one point and just mention very few details for the second point. This is acceptable for band 6.

Assessment Parameter 2 : Coherence & Cohesion

Target :

  • Information and ideas are generally arranged coherently and there is a clear overall progression.
  • Cohesive devices are used to some good effect but cohesion within and/or between sentences may be faulty or mechanical due to misuse, overuse, or omission.

How to achieve :

Essay and the letter have to be coherent and shoud use cohesive devices. Both of them need a slightly different approach for the structure but the main gist is same in order to achieve the target. Here is what you can do :

  • Use Clear Topic Sentences – Whether you right introductory paragraph or the main one, you need to be clear so that the examiner understands that you are sticking to the topic. As you are targeting band 6, you can still accept overusing same phrase. Also, mechanical structure errors are acceptable
  • Use Transitional Phrases – This is a very important point to add. Using phrases like “For example”, “In order to”, “therefore”, “In addition to” will definitely help you gain good marks.
  • Maintain a Logical Flow of Content – Make sure your statements are in order and paragraphs are organised logically. You cannot write conclusion in second paragraph and give example in the next one.

Example

Your sentence can technically mean correct, but they are organised with mecahnical faults. Consider below statement.

He is a troublesome human, and consequently, I do not associate with him. Furthermore, I have a disrespect hate to him.

How you can use transition and create logic flow to make it score higher :

He is a bad boy. He is not my friend. I hate him

The statement with the error uses the correct words but arranged in a weird manner. That can still let you achieve band 6 as the technical meaning is clear with the statement.

Here is one article that you can read to enhance your writing skills (Click Here)

Assessment Parameter 3 : Lexical Resource

  • The resource is generally adequate and appropriate for the task.
  • The meaning is generally clear in spite of a rather restricted range or a lack of precision in word choice.
  • If the writer is a risk-taker, there will be a wider range of vocabulary used but higher degrees of inaccuracy or inappropriacy.

How to achieve :

Use range of words and avoid repetition. Also as you are targeting band 6, your wrong choice of words is acceptable till it conveys the correct meaning.Let us consider this with example :

Example :

Let us consider the same example as that of previous paragraph :

Statement that get you band 6 :He is a bad boy and that is why he is not my friend. Moreover, I hate him.

Allowed mistakes :

Let me explain this with the same example. You may say naughty guy instead of bad boy. That is more informal but is technically correct.

Assessment Parameter 4 : Grammatical Range & Accuracy

  • A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is used but flexibility is limited.
  • Examples of more complex structures are not marked by the same level of accuracy as in simple structures.
  • Errors in grammar and punctuation occur, but rarely impede communication.

How to achieve :

  • Complex Sentence – Usage of complex sentences is very important. Complex sentences are 2 simple sentences that are dependent on each other for explaining the meaning.
    • I went to store because I was hungry. In this sentence 2 simple sentences are combined to give a meaningful statement. This is perfect usage of complex sentence.
  • Appropriate usage of Comma – If you make sentences and include comma appropriately, you can achieve good score in Grammar.

Example :

Although their house is over there, we decided to walk here.

The above sentence uses complex structure with appropriate placement of comma.

Allowed mistakes :

You can spell their / there incorrectly. Like you could say Although there house is over their. This is not correct but it clearly tells that you know what you mean. It is just you are confused while writing the spellings.

Final Thoughts

Band 6 in IELTS General Test Writing is pretty easy if you :

  • Write for complete task request with minor thought deviations.
  • Make organised structure of the content.
  • Use moderate level vocabulary.
  • Minor errors in grammar that will not change the meaning of the statements.

Sample Task to Understand the concept better

Essay Topic :

“Some people believe that teaching children at home is best for a child’s development while others think that it is important for children to go to school. Discuss the advantages of both methods and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.”

Sample Answer :

Introduction Paragraph (General Statement + Paraphrase of the Question + Sentence 3 – Thesis)

General Statement – With advent of Technology, educational paradigms are constantly evolving.Paraphrase –  Advocates of homeschooling emphasize its personalized learning and safe environment whereas proponents of Traditional Schooling highlight the importance of socialization. Thesis – The debate over this topic is a complex one with compelling arguments from both the sides. This essay will explore the advantages of both educational approaches and will conclude with my personal viewpoint.

Body Paragraph 1

Heading – Homeschooling offers plenty of benefits that can significantly impact the learning experience. Connector – To begin with, Idea 1 Onine education can offer personalized learning experience. Explanation of Idea with example For example, a recent study done by Husuzuki Foundation of Japan highlights that with the online learning platforms 95% of the students study the same topic with different approach whereas the same topic is taught in same manner to 100 % of the students. Hence children are not able to understand the basic concept. Connector 2 + Idea 2 Moreover, homelearning enables a secure and nurturing environment where parents can monitor the child behavior and protect the child from potential bullying. Explanation of Idea 2 with example For instance, 83% students of Mondelz School of London reported that they have faced the issue of bullying personally in their school life and 78% of the students had the recent experience within last month. Conclusion Hence, majority of people prefer the culture of studying from home.

Body Paragraph 2

Connector + Idea 1 – Nevertheless, Traditional Schooling on other hand provides enormous opportunities of socialization that any home scholor cannot get throughout his life. Explanation of Idea with example  In one of the recent example, Boston University analyzed a batch of students with mixed strength of students studying from home and bunch of children who were going to regular school and they found that home scholors have an extremely weird behavior and they were reluctant to coordinate in teams. This is very bad for future industries. Connector 2 + Idea 2 Additionally, Schools offer access to wealth of resources including specialised teachers and counsellors who can analyze the child behavior and guide them to pick the next course. To illustrate 81% parants of home scholars were unable to guide them chosing the right path and the students relied on internet research for understanding the market trend. They failed to pick a right career path which coud have been best based on their skillset.

Conclusion

Paraphrase Thesis The debate between traditional schooling and home education is multifaceted and does not have a straightforward conclusion. Summary + Personal opinion In my opinion, there should be a balance between the learning environment. Adaption of the hybrid cutlture can be the effective solution, where 2 days can be reserved for online classes whereas 3 working days students should attend the physical lectures. Final Thought This will surely be the most effective way of imparting education & can help in paving the path of success for the new generation.

IELTS Essay writing is the Task Number 2 for both Academic and General Training Test takers. The intreresting point is that both categories of Test Takers face equal challenges while working on this question. Most common issue is the generation of ideas for the topic asked in the exam.

Problem

Unable to generate ideas for writing an effective Essay for IELTS writing Task 2.

Root Cause

1) Un-related Topic

This is the most common reason of not having enough points for writing the essay. People usually get a topic which is not related to their field. For example, a Doctor appearing for IELTS exam gets a topic of advancement in Artificial Intelligence. The test taker becomes clueless for some time and then writes whatever comes in mind.

2) Never practiced a similar question before

This is a fact which will remain forever valid. Nobody can practice all topics. Most of the test takers get stressed out after seeing a question which they are reading for the first time.

Do not worry !! We have an interesting solution that will surely solve your problem.

Solution : Mastering Idea Generation Technique for Essay Writing Task

  • L – Legal
PESTHEL Technique for IELTS Essay writing idea generation

The key rule is whichever topic you get, you have to start identifying the points related to the topic which have relation to the PESTHEL approach. To understand better, let us consider the following example :

Suppose you get a topic to write an essay for the topic related to advancement in AI, the steps you have to follow are.

Think of the key points that are related to Artificical Intelligence which are related to :

  1. P (Political) – Your idea could be that politicians can hire tech companies which will use AI to study demographic behavior of a specific region and plan the action campaign accordingly. Other point could be that political parties can use AI for identifying the lesson learnt from past political failures.
  2. S (Social) – When you consider the social angle, you can think of the problems that AI will bring to the society. For example, the robots will replace the human in jobs. With AI like Face swapping and voice changer, people can harm the social image of anyone and can create an atmosphere of hate.

Similarly, you can think of all aspects and generate enormous number of ideas.

  • Economical
    • Reduction in Human errors in industries with advancement of AI.
    • One robot can replace multiple humans
  • Technology
    • New Innovation in field of Medicine Science that could possibly cure deadly diseases.
  • Health
    • Advanced robotic surgeries with more precision and success rate.
    • Effective and fast diagnosis of illness
  • Environmental
    • Identifying natural occuring chemical compounds that can convert Co2 to O2.
  • Legal
    • Fake Videos and Voice.
    • Faster analysis of court case by AI.

This is just an example, you can generate countless ideas with this approach. Just give it a try. Moreover, it is important to note that whatever ideas you generate, you should stick to the following rules as well :

  1. You have to proceed step by step and think sequentially.
  2. It is not necessary that you think and write about all the points. The idea is to enable generation of multiple ideas without putting much effort.
  3. Ideas could be negative or positive and you can use them effectively in your Essay.

Once you are ready with the ideas, the next step is to fit your ideas in the effective Essay structure. Here it the link for the article.
