Argumentative Essays are important to learn and are repeatedly asked in the IELTS exam. Here is how you can master the skills of writing any question for the debate type essay.

IELTS argumentative Essay Structure

As you know Coherence and Cohesion play important role in your IELTS score and hence the structure of your essay plays is critical.

Mastering the Argumentative Essay Structure

You have to be very organised and the following structure can help you achieve your goal :

1) First Paragraph

  • Sentence 1 – General Statement.
  • Sentence 2 – Connector (Example While) + Paraphrase of the First View point + Paraphrase of Second View point
  • Sentence 3 – Thesis (Write your view point)

2) Body Paragraph 1 (Write about First View point and Quote references)

  • Sentence 1 – Heading Sentence of paragraph
  • Sentence 2 – Use Connector + Idea 1
  • Sentence 3 – Explanation of Idea with example
  • Sentence 4 – Connector + Idea  2
  • Sentence 5 – Explanation of Idea with Example
  • Sentence 6 – Closing

3) Body Paragraph 2 (Write about Second View point and Quote references)

  • Sentence 1 – Use Connector + Idea 1
  • Sentence 2 – Explanation of Idea 1 with example
  • Sentence 3 – Connector + Idea  2
  • Sentence 4 – Explanation of Idea with Example
  • Sentence 5 – Closing

4) Conclusion Paragraph

  • Sentence 1 – Paraphrase Thesis statement (As in Introduction)
  • Sentence 2 – Summarize Key point + Your opinion
  • Sentence 3 – Final Thought

Important Points

  1. Prefer having a clear stand of your viewpoint. This helps in writing clear structured essay.
  2. Content reality does not matter. Quote hypothetical examples.

Sample Question

Smartphones have impacted life of childrent drastically. Some argue about positive sides and many feel it has a big negative side. What do you think, how smart phones impact the life of children

Answer

1) First Paragraph

(General Statement) With advent of smartphone technology, daily activities of people, especially children have become dependent on the gadget that without it life cannot be imagined. (Paraphrase) While Advocates of innovation emphasise in increase use of smartphones for children, the proponents of old school system has a big list of disadvantages. (Thesis) The debate over this topic is complex one with compelling arguments from both the sides. This essay will showcase and brief about the pros and cons of kids using smartphones and will conclude with my personal opinion.

2) Body Paragraph 1

Heading – Smartphones have plenty of benefits that can significantly impact life of children. Connector – To begin with, Idea 1 Children use the mobile devices for their education and this is helping students located at remote locations to access world class knowledge sessions via virtual classrooms. Explanation of Idea with example For example, a recent study done by Charlie Foundation of Austria highlights that 95% of the online classes are atended on smartphones. Connector 2 + Idea 2 Moreover, children travelling alone can easily connect with their parents and loved ones through the smartphone applications. Explanation of Idea 2 with example For instance, 75% students of Mondelz School of London reported that they use smartphone location sharing with their family members. Conclusion Hence, the benefits of the smartphones make the device

3) Body Paragraph 2

Connector + Idea 1 – Nevertheless, there is a big count of people who believe smartphones are destroying the kids and ruining their health badly. Explanation of Idea with example  In one of the recent example, London University arranged 2 months camp for young students with no access to modern technology and were surprised to see that children had poor coordination and physical strength in the first 2 weeks but were unbelievably fit after the end of the camp. Connector 2 + Idea 2 Additionally, because of excessive smartphone operations, children are compomising their eyesight as well. To illustrate 81% of the students in Birmingham district have myopia which will become adverse in their old ages.

4) Conclusion

Paraphrase Thesis The debate between people supporting smartphone usage within kids and people disbelieving it is multifaceted and does not have a straightforward conclusion. Summary + Personal opinion In my opinion, kids using smartphones should be encouraged. Undoubtedly the benefits overweighs the side effects. Final Thought Whether you agree or not, smartphones have become integral part of lifestyle, especially amongst children
